100 Questions for Webmasters

- 1. Please introduce yourself.
- My name is Martin (or Collin or Izzith), I run compulsivecomputer.net and I've been a webdarling since 2022!
- 2. How long have you been making websites?
- About 4-5 years now... crazy right
- 3. And what got you into the hobby?
- I was always intrigued by personal websites, I don't remember how exactly but I stumbled across Neocities and wanted to make a website of my own. I also saw an artist I really enjoy website, so that gave me the final push to try and learn to make my own website, without the help of website makers.
- 4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
- I try to look indepth with ay personal website I see, I really do enjoy down to earth websites, same with blogs on stuff I'm also interested in, mainly tech or such. I also like pages dedicated to "essays" or analysis.
- 5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
- My workflow is quite all over the place, but I do tend to plan out/envision how I would like the page to be, and then I go from there.
- 6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
- Here was one of the main websites I used to look back to, or at least this artist's previous homepage Valarkspur. Also unrelated technically but this website I remember always going back to mainly for the content and the aspect of a personal portfolio... Bithox.
- 7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
- Mainly just decorating and figuring out new looks for the pages :-p
- 8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
- Finishing some of my pages lol
- 9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
- I always find different pages more interesting personally, and fun to make.
- 10. How confident are you with CSS?
- I've gotten pretty used to it, but I still prefer in html css.
- 11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
- I actually hadn't seen this tag used before... whoops.
- 12. What is your favourite HTML element?
- <.div> and border box.
- 13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
- I thinnk abt what particulary I am writing or making a page about, knowing exactly what I want is important to it's whole creation.
- 14. Do you know JavaScript?
- Yup.
- 15. How about PHP?
- Not a whole lot, but I know it's cool...
- 16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
- Sometimes, I think I've leaned more on darker colors and surreal looking images, but some of them are still quite bright and colorful.
- 17. Are you more focused on content or design?
- Design but I still care about the type of stuff I'm putting in these pages!
- 18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
- I do, have been since 2025 :-].
- 19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
- I think some of them are fine in a vaccum, at some point I was/still am miffed over the oversaturation of them but hey, we're all guilty of it.
- 20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
- Sometimes.
- 21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
- They're fun and cute! I like making or seeing them.
- 22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
- I tend to be too tired to update them as much,,, still they're nice to have.
- 23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
- Honestly, something completely different, you change sometimes and that just reflects better.
- 24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
- Sometimes, I admire the stuff people put out.
- 25. What text editor do you use?
- VS code and VS codium.
- 26. Why do you use that one?
- It was personally the easiest for me to get used to, alongside the live preview.
- 27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
- I used to use some image hosts for my images, but I've started to try and self host and be more concious over my space usage.
- 28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
- Thog don't care.
- 29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
- 235.16 mb... wow!
- 30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
- Not always, but I like to keep copies of something files.
- 31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
- I prefer a good contrast of both, being both accessible yet stylish.
- 32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
- I do, I tend to like darker aesthetics and I do stray far from more "childish" or pastel themes, it just suits what I like personally.
- 33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
- Not really, it's more so just how my site would evolve or when I would be able to really change or add stuff.
- 34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
- I do! It's been really nice talking to others :-].
- 35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
- No, but apparently one of my friends irl mutuals knew of my website :sob:
- 36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
- I used to back in the day when I was much younger, and had nothing else to do but since I'm much older and busier, I find it a little harder. But I still try and make time for it.
- 37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
- I actually just redesigned/majorly overhauled my website's design, I try not to but it's inevitable that you would want some change.
- 38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
- It's definitely my little world, a combination for the first two.
- 39. Do you do web design professionally?
- Nope!
- 40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
- I've thought of such, but I don't think I'm anywhere near that skill level, my work is stuff outside of internet stuff like care taking and catering.
- 41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
- Not as much as I do, but I always enjoy reading an email!
- 42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
- Very recently, I deleted a majority of my social medias, I still do use them just to look at posts and keep up, but I think it's better for me to focus more on my website again.
- 43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
- I use discord and that's about it, I'm honestly really bad at being active/taking part in conversations but I do try.
- 44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
- It's a mix of that, youtuber videos or pure silence, sometimes I feel like I get disctracted by the sounds.
- 45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
- My site is an everything thing, but I do have another site specifically for my story project!
- 46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
- Many! I enjoy variety.
- 47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
- This is something I really struggle with still, to not get too deep or anything, I feel ashamed whenever I feel like a construct a "fake" version of myself. I want to be myself, but I feel like I both don't like myself nor do I really know myself. I hope my website can help me build that up again.
- 48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
- Yes!
- 49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
- It works perfectly for me, even if I get frustrated over something breaking.
- 50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
- Please organize your files better/try to optimize your images.
- 51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
- What I mentioned above, also taking into consideration different screen resolutions/aspect ratios.
- 52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
- idk what this is honestly
- 53. Do you consider different browsers?
- I have, changed between different firefox forks.
- 54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
- Librewolf is a good firefox alternative if you're willing to give up automatic dark mode, waterfox is also good but kinda troublesome on linux.
- 55. And what OS are you on?
- When I made my website, I was using windows 10, but I've switched to EndeavourOS since 2025!
- 56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
- I think I enjoy Linux a lot more in recent and I'm glad to have overcomed the innitial learning curve to be relatively comfortable daily driving it :-].
- 57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
- Yes! As best as I can.
- 58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
- I don't mind it, just as long as I can toggle it/it isn't too loud.
- 59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
- I host my own! I've also been trying to re-enter some recently.
- 60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
- I used to have some, I might put some up again. I really like seeing the person's experience to the topic the shrine is about.
- 61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
- I don't think so.
- 62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
- My ideal website personally is something that can invoke something insightful or intrigueing to whoever is reading.
- 63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
- I am, I do create a good amount of stuff like logos or edit certain assets.
- 64. What are your favourite resource sites?

- 65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
- Not writing alt text all the time :sob:
- 66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
- Learn to neatly write your code! and be organized!!!!!
- 67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
- I hard code it.
- 68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
- I do like some of them, not for me though sometimes.
- 69. How about table-based layouts?
- Same as above.
- 70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
- I do, I like having these containers in their own columns.
- 71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
- HTML generally!
- 72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
- Technically I don't tend to use CSS pages itself, I find it easier to just put it all in the same page.
- 73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
- Occasionally, but not that much.
- 74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
- I think I'm somewhat more advanced, but I'm clearly no way near as good as I think I could get compared to other websites.
- 75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
- Sometimes, I just like seeing how it all works.
- 76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
- It was a mix of frankensteining different pieces of code I've tried learning, using spacehey's HTML/CSS feature and looking at how other's websites looked.
- 77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
- Occasionally, but I try not too if it conflicts too much or is just too frustrating.
- 78. Thoughts on floating elements?
- I think they can work, I don't use them much I think though.
- 79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
- I tend to use % and ems nowadays for accessibility.
- 80. Do you have a favourite font?
- I like the slightly fancy looking fonts, or pixelized fonts.
- 81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
- I have done projects like that before, though I was the main website runner.
- 82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
- Not as much, but I still enjoy visiting other's websites when present.
- 83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
- I do! Also I would feel nice nowing someone would do so.
- 84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
- I think what's presented on them.
- 85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
- I am, I've garnered an interest in computers/tech and gnu/linux. I got a thinkpad which I've tinkered around with.
- 86. How often and for how long are you online?
- Quite a long time haha... probably since I was at least 10-11.
- 87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
- Nowadays, it's probably people my age or older. Maybe those in similar spaces as I was.
- 88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
- Idk what that is lol.
- 89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
- I'm not too sure, my only experience in coding is gamedev with the use of rpgmaker, renpy and godot.
- 90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
- I've use some before, I think they're fine for what they serve.
- 91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
- Nope, I just don't see the use in one.
- 92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
- Not too much, just anything that piques my interest.
- 93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
- Sometimes I write it in a libredoc document, but I do write right in the editor sometimes.
- 94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
- I've had compliments towards my website and the like, it definitely feels like whiplash cause I see myself way less cooler tbh. One time my canadian friend told me apparently someone from his school showed my website to him, not knowing me and him were actually online friends which was LOL.
- 95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
- I do tend to get embarrassed or paranoid over my pages, but I try not to feel as ashamed now. But I have deleted some much older pages.
- 96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
- I think I would leave an archive, I can't fathom deleting or closing my website honestly.
- 97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
- I sometimes am quite secretive, but I have been very open about personal details about myself such as my mental illnesses or thoughts.
- 98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
- I don't really know beyond a shout out or something.
- 99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
- Yes!! Optimize your images nooooowwww.
- 100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
